Weird Radar Review: Mih-Ty – Jeremih & Ty Dolla $ign

The long awaited Mih-Ty album by the current bad boys of R&B, Jeremih and Ty Dolla $ign is finally here! After hearing the album was scheduled for release August 24th, it was unfortunately cancelled and pushed back to October 26, 2018.

While we were waiting, we had their joint singles The Light, Goin’ Thru Some Thangz, and once the album was released, there was a third promotional single featuring Lil Wayne titled New Level. The album has features from Lil Wayne, French Montana, Chris Brown, and Wiz Khalifa, with production from Hitmaka, OG Parker, Ayo & Keyz, Go Grizz and so many more!

In this day and age, so much music is being released, and not being thoroughly consumed. I feel that we all are so quick to listen to music but not live with it, so we end up searching for the next thing. My initial reaction when I saw the track list was the same as everyone else’s, “damn, it’s short,” but that’s because I’m used to a great deal of music being released at one time, and because I always want more from these artists.

After living with the music for 2 weeks, which should be enough time to digest, I now consider “Mih-Ty” as one of my favorite R&B albums of 2018. The thing that I love most about Ty Dolla $ign and Jeremih is that they both know how to flip old R&B songs and make them sound like their own. They are amazing writers and they know what songs work for them and their style. Throughout the album, you hear throwback samples from In My Bed by Dru Hill, Rising to the Top by Keni Burke, with interpolations from All Night Long by Mary Jane Girls (produced and arranged by legend Rick James), Back in the Day by Ahmad, and F*ck You Tonight by The Notorious B.I.G.

Sometimes, for me, it’s the little things, and I like hearing artists do their own spin on the oldies. Even though it’s always hard to clear samples, it’s always great to hear artists pay homage.

The flow of the Mih-Ty album is really smooth and you don’t want it to end. Each song is catchy, but my top favorites are: Perfect Timing; New Level, which has the Dru Hill sample; These DaysSurrounded with Chris Brown and Wiz Khalifa, which samples Skeletons by Travi$ Scott from his latest AstroWorld album; Lie 2 Me; and Imitate.
