]]>“Simple walk to the corner store/Mama never thought she would be/Getting a call from the coroner/Said her sons been gunned down,” she sings of an everyday task turning violent. The verse mirrors the 2014 murder of Michael Brown that sparked protests throughout Ferguson.
The second verse paints the story of Sandra Bland, who was arrested during a traffic stop and found hanged in a police cell in 2015. “New job, new city, new her/Bright-eyed, you would have been proud if you knew her/Flashing lights in the mirror, pull over, pull over/A couple nights in detention and it’s over, a whole life’s over.”
These emotional stories are tied together with her haunting echo, “I guess you picked the perfect way to die.” The words linger heavily like our responsibility to fuel change in any way we can. “Of course, there is NO perfect way to die,” she wrote. “That phrase doesn’t even make sense. Just like it doesn’t make sense that there are so many innocent lives that should not have been taken from us due to the destructive culture of police violence.”

With the free time, JoJo rewrote her hit song “Leave (Get out)” to “Chill (Stay in).” She encourages her fans to practice social distancing and to stay safe at home. Some of those lyric changes include “I’ve been chilling at home the past few days/So you gotta Facetime to talk to me/ To tell me how we’re gonna get through this together.” JoJo really wanted to help create a lighthearted mood and get people to smile.

]]>The 61st Annual Grammy Awards is a night to celebrate music and the people who create it. Artists come together to share their love for music and bring a diverse group of performances to showcase their success.
10. Dan+Shay
This duo took the stage on a piano and guitar to perform ‘Tequila.” This stripped down version of the song really set an emotional vibe during the night. Shay, who was playing the piano, stepped out behind it to belt out the end of song leaving the crowd in awe.
Camila Cabello opened the Grammy’s up with a Latin-vibe with her song “Havana” and Young Thug came on stage to join her. Moments later, Ricky Martin and J. Balvin joined Camila to sing a medley of “Pegate” and “Mi Gente.” Camilla is the first Latina to ever open the Grammy’s, definitely something to be proud of.
The big winner of the night taking ‘Album of the Year’ along with three more Grammy awards performed her song “Rainbow.” She recently released the music video for the song showcasing the struggles that people go through. “It will be alright” Musgraves sings giving everyone a sense of hope to hold on to.
7. H.E.R
H.E.R had an incredible night as she won a Grammy for Best R&B Album. She performed “Hard Place.” A beautiful performance in my opinion that showcased her voice and with a string ensemble backing her as well it added an element of amazement.
Monae performed “Make Me Feel.” She was one of the first few artists to perform and she set a futuristic vibe with the choreography and wardrobe. She got the crowd on their feet and dancing, showcasing black girl magic.
5. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga gave a timeless performance as she performed “Shallow” from the movie, A Star is Born. Along Mark Ronson, Lady Gaga gave powerhouse vocals definitely leaving an impact on the crowd.
4. Dua Lipa and St. Vincent
Dua and St. Vincent put on a great performance while performing “Masseducation,” “R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” and “One Kiss.” They both complimented one another very well as Dua added seduction and St.Vincent added an edge to the performance.
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Post Malone
Post Malone performed a stripped down version of “Stay,” which then transitioned to “Rockstar.” He then joined the Red Hot Chili Pepper to sing “Dark Necessities.” It’s really cool to see artists from different genres band together to perform and create music.
Jennifer Lopez took the stage to pay a tribute to Motown’s best hits. From singing “Dancing in the Streets” to “My Girl,” the energy she put on stage really made the tribute standout as one of the best performances.
1. Alicia Keys (Club Keys)
Alicia Keys took the stage as the host for the night but also performed a wonderful medley of songs as she welcomed you to Club Keys. She mentioned how she loved these songs to the point she wished she was the one that had written them. Singing a medley including Roberta Flack’s “Killing me Softly,” Juice World’s “Lucid Dreams” to “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon, and others.
