Glitter has become an increasingly popular accessory for music festival attendees. The craft supply, which never seems to fully disappear from hair and clothing, is causing a bigger issue – it is hurting the Earth.

The UK is taking a stand against this tiny combination of plastic, and metal by banning it from many festivals. This is part of a bigger ban which includes the ban of all sales of, cotton swabs, plastic straws, and single-use plastics in the UK. 

This is just one step in the country’s 25 Year Environmental Plan, which aims to eliminate avoidable plastic waste.

The Association of Independent Festivals (AIF), launched the ‘#Drastic On Plastic’ digital campaign on April 22, 2018.

The websites of all 61 festivals involved were “wrapped in plastic” for 24 hours.  The #DrasticOnPlastic pledge was signed by festivals which make up the AIF and are required to become completely free of single-use plastics by 2021 – including straws, plastic cups, food trays, wet wipes and other single-use plastics.

The banning of glitter may be devastating news, however, there is a solution – biodegradable glitter. 

This can be found online on Cosmetic BioGlitz, or Etsy shops such as, EcoSparkles, VivaLaGlitterlution, and SparklePigGlitter.

BioGlitz pledges their glitter is, “produced from a biodegradable film that is certified compostable, derived from sustainable sources, and does not contain materials that are genetically modified nor materials obtained from genetically modified organisms.”  The trees used to create the biodegradable film are sourced from The Forest Stewardship Council Certified suppliers.

By making the switch to biodegradable glitter, music festival attendees are being more environmentally friendly.
