With that being said, this is the first project Madisen has had complete control over, with the help of her producer/boyfriend, Josh. Together, they wrote, recorded, and produced the EP. “The past few years have been a whole new experience for me. [Songwriting is] like getting to know a new skill but also the skill requires getting to know yourself a lot. I think I still have a lot of growth to do but for me these songs represent my first experience with writing songs that I actually like the outcome. Most all of the songs were written each in one sitting. I get an idea and then just go for it. Sometimes I’ll come back and add, but I usually try to finish a section just to conceptualize. I want to get better at taking my time with an idea. I feel like the more time and thought I put into something the better it will turn out,” Madisen shares.

After increasingly songwriting more and more throughout quarantine, Madisen began sharing her music more via social media like TikTok and Instagram. Madisen’s listeners urged her to release more music after the particular success of her first single “Baby in Blue,” but Madisen wasn’t ready to release an album quite yet. “I didn’t want to put out a whole album. I just didn’t feel like I was ready yet. But Josh and I had been working on all of these songs over the past 6 months and I wanted people to hear them. I was really proud of them. So we chose the songs we made that we felt were our favorites. There were quite a few that didn’t make the cut that I still love and will probably come back to. But an EP has to be under a certain length or else it’s considered an album, which worked out perfectly because we felt all six of these were really cohesive together,” Madisen explains.

Madisen has gotten inspiration for her music from artists across several genres. Her favorite song, “Easier,” was inspired particularly by Sufjan Stevens. “Originally when I wrote it I was trying to channel Sufjan Stevens, and then we really got inspired by Ethan Gruska‘s production on his own album and Phoebe Bridgers‘. Which is basically an amalgamation of some of my top favorite artists. Even though the song is really sad we found ourselves dancing to it in the studio which I thought was hilarious and amazing. I like the song because sometimes things you write come in and out of relevancy. Right now, it’s feeling super relevant to me personally. And also the understated nature of it makes me want to listen to it over and over. I love the pulse and the chords mixed with the pluck guitar,” Madisen says. Madisen’s other inspirations for this project included Soccer Mommy and Lana Del Rey on the title track, “Plead No Contest.” Clairo and Lizzy McAlpine were inspirations for the song “Anchor,” and you can hear the influence of Lucy Dacus and Taylor Swift on “Lake Monster.”

The EP’s production is definitely impressive as well. Madisen says that Josh’s inspirations include Bon Iver, Aphex Twin, and Flume. Madisen credits help for helping produce the entire EP, but he had particular creative control on “Seven O’ Clock” and “Lake Monster.” “Seven O’ Clock is the more electronic one, [some of this sound was influenced by] Caroline Polachek, she is one of my favorites. I wanted this one to have some of that in it, that’s where Josh came in. Honestly I let him take the lead on the production in this one (meaning I didn’t give a whole lot of suggestions) and the more he did, the more I loved it… I loved mixing that into my more acoustic sound, I thought it ended up sounding very unique.” Madisen explains.

Madisen also says that Josh helped a lot with the production of “Lake Monster,” which she says was the most difficult song for her to make. “The most difficult song to put together was definitely Lake Monster. It took a week to write I think… The song was actually written from my sister’s perspective. This was the first time I had ever written a song from someone else’s perspective and not my own, and I really felt it stood out in my catalogue. But then when we got to recording, it was really a challenge to capture the perfect mood of the song. We wanted it to really build and get intense, but also come down on certain parts. This was hard to pull off. Then we decided we wanted this huge ending, and that has so many tracks on it I can’t even tell you how many. Josh probably knows. It was hard to find the balance between epic and messy. We came back to it so many times, making more and more changes. In the end, I had to stop listening to it just so I could come back with fresh ears and really see if I liked it. Right before we dropped the EP, I honestly was scared, I felt it was the riskiest one because it’s super wordy and more story focused and not strictly structured like a pop song. But then now after it’s out it turned out to be one of my favorites. The risk paid off! For me the song represents a big growth in my songwriting.”

As a listener with no songwriting abilities, let me just be the first to say that Madisen pulled off everything she intended to do with this EP. Every song sounds different to the one that came before, yet the project is completely cohesive. You can hear Madisen’s inspirations in her music, but she has her own unique style at the same time. Sorry, I know the title of this article misleads the reader to think that I had some seething review of one reworked song. Turns out, remixes are fun. The band expressed their support on Twitter, so go give it a listen! While still featuring Clairo’s soothing voice, Mura Masa’s rendition presents a different energy from the original– truly a testament to the power of collaboration. Now I have different versions for different playlists, and so do you.

The music doesn’t stop there…

Wallows spent quarantine focusing on creativity and productivity, releasing another new single as a teaser for their upcoming EP, “REMOTE.” This latest song, “Nobody Gets Me (Like You),” is upbeat and poppy– a total feel-good jam for a brisk walk on a sunny day. They also took the time to create a corresponding music video, posting the news on social media earlier this month.

The Wallows band members have been busy!

On top of cultivating a new EP and music video, they performed in a virtual tour. Yet another example of artists making the best of an online-music-year, Wallows went live every night, broadcasting songs and interacting with fans. 30 minutes before each set, the band hung out online to answer questions and give viewers the closest possible thing to an in-person experience.

1. Omar Apollo – “Kamikaze
The newest single from 23-year-old alternative R&B artist, Omar Apollo, dropped on September 10. It’s a great song with a funky beat; give it a listen if you’re a fan of Steve Lacy, Dominic Fike, or Still Woozy. The song is the second single following “Stayback,” which was released in August for an upcoming album that is set to receive a public release date.

“Kamikaze” is a song that taps into my old emotions, taking it back to when I was younger. When I made “Kamikaze” I was reminiscing on how I used to feel for someone and realizing those feelings are lost and we’re left with nothing. It feels good to hold on to the memories without the feelings it gave me.

2. Still Woozy – “BS”
Sven Gamsky, the genius behind Still Woozy, has done it again. The single is a bit slower than some fans may expect from the indie singer-songwriter, but is sure to be a favorite nonetheless. If you like alternative bedroom pop like Gus Dapperton or Clairo, you are definitely already a Still Woozy fan. There is also an awesome music video for the single, watch it below:

3. Lava La Rue – “G.O.Y.D”
Lava La Rue, whose stage name is anagrammed from her actual name, Ava Laurel, is a 22-year-old contemporary R&B/rap artist from West London. With less than 100,000 listeners on Spotify, she’s up-and-coming, but surely paving her way in the music industry. On this track, she’s joined by bedroom pop dream girl, Clairo, who does some backing vocals on the song. If you’re a fan of Raveena, Kali Uchis, or Solange, you’ll quickly become a fan of Lava La Rue. Listen to the song below:

As concert dates are being postponed for what may feel like forever, amongst the mystery of our country in a global pandemic, we can at least be thankful for the new singles that artists are dropping along the way.

ODESZA and Golden Features’ collaborative project, BRONSON, finally comes with a debut album attached. Congratulations to them on bringing this project to fruition. Titled short and sweet, BRONSON was dropped last week after the original July release date was postponed.

And it was worth the wait

We’ve all been sitting on pins and needles since the album release was postponed to August, but now it’s out and ready for listening. Despite having their own distinct sounds, ODESZA and Golden Features came together to create a project that pushed them out of their comfort zones and into a new creative space, as the artists said on Twitter.

We’ve had plenty of sneak peeks— what with the singles released earlier this summer– but now we can enjoy this musical project in its entirety. Soak it all in, because after you listen, you may find yourself repeating Golden Features…

Today, I’d like to keep it pretty chill– just sharing some recent music releases that will hopefully brighten another summer week without live music. Short and sweet, this playlist is a perfect way to wrap up the last week of June and prepare us to step into July ready to devour whatever our favorite artists throw at us. 

This week marked the release of two highly anticipated albums. Bassnectar finally dropped All Colors. Featuring a variety of sounds and tones, each song comes together to create this testament to positivity and creativity. Louis The Child also celebrated a release date this week, as their latest album, Here For Now, went live on the 26th. All I had to do was hear the first few notes, and I knew I was listening to the ultimate summer 2020 album (while a friend of mine heard the same song, and said, “Are we going to listen to this white girl music all day?” so y’know, check it out for yourself). 

Those aren’t the only new tunes at our disposal from this week, so I made sure to sprinkle in some new singles and remixes by artists like GRiZ, Flume, Zeds Dead, and more!

1. “I See You” by Phoebe Bridgers

Indie singer-songwriter, Phoebe Bridgers, dropped her newest single, “I See You,” on May 19. Her new album, Punisher, is set to release on June 19. “I See You” is a song in which Bridgers recalls her breakup with the drummer in her band, Marshall Vore, who co-wrote the song and plays drums on it. If you’re a fan of Bridgers’ previous discography, be sure to check out her new album, Punisher, once it is released next month.

2. “19” by Madisenxoxo

Up-and-coming alternative singer-songwriter, Madisenxoxo, has been blowing up on TikTok and Spotify. Her newest single, “19,” has the same well-crafted songwriting as her previous single “Baby in Blue,” with a slightly more uplifting mood to the song. If you’re a fan of artists like Clairo or Soccer Mommy, Madisenxoxo is an artist who should definitely be on your radar. 

3. “Rain On Me (with Ariana Grande)” by Lady Gaga feat. Ariana Grande

Lady Gaga is joined by fellow pop icon, Ariana Grande, in the second and newest single off of her upcoming album, Chromatica. The album drops tomorrow, May 29, and will be Gaga’s sixth studio album. Fans have been long awaiting a new album, since the 2016 country-pop album, Joanne. “Rain On Me (with Ariana Grande)” is a pop dance anthem that is sure to be the soundtrack to summer 2020.

4. “Don’t Wanna” by Haim

The alternative band of sisters, Haim, is back with their newest single, “Don’t Wanna,” from their upcoming album. Women in Music Pt. III is set to come out on June 26. In this song, the band channels the sound of their first album, Days Are Gone, from 2013. The bassline in the chorus of “Don’t Wanna” has a familiarity to it which fans of that album are definitely going to enjoy. After releasing three songs and three bonus tracks from the upcoming album, Haim listeners are excited to hear what’s in store on the new album.

5. “I Think You’re Alright” by Soccer Mommy

Indie singer-songwriter, Soccer Mommy, launched a project called “Soccer Mommy & Friends Singles Series” in which she has asked four musician friends to swap songs, covering each other’s music. In the first installment, which was released on May 21, Soccer Mommy was joined by singer Jay Som. Soccer Mommy covered Jay Som’s “I Think You’re Alright,” while Jay Som covered Soccer Mommy’s song “lucy.” Every two weeks, Soccer Mommy will be releasing more additions of her Singles Series and will be joined by Beabadoobee, Andrew VanWyngarden, and Beach Bunny. Soccer Mommy is releasing her singles series as an album once all of the additions are released. All profits from Bandcamp sales of the “Soccer Mommy & Friends Singles Series” album will be donated to Oxfam’s COVID-19 relief fund.

As for officially announced albums go, our top 3 albums to look out for this year are as follows:

1. Haim, (Women in Music Pt. III) – To be released on 4/24

It’s been almost three years since sister trio Haim released their second album, Something to Tell You, in 2017.  More recently, the band released the song “The Steps,” and put their three singles from 2019 on The Steps EP, which released on March 3, 2020. With the release of this EP, Haim also announced that their third album, Women in Music Pt. III, is to come out on April 24, 2020. Haim took the alternative music scene by storm right off the bat with their first album, Days Are Gone, in 2013, and fans are interested to hear how Haim’s sound has changed since their last two albums.

2. The Weeknd, After Hours – To be released on 3/20

The Canadian R&B singer, The Weeknd, hasn’t released an album since 2018’s My Dear Melancholy, but since 2019, he’s dropped three singles in preparation for the upcoming album After Hours. After Hours is set to release on March 20, 2020, and fans are itching to hear the new music from The Weeknd. Abel, the singer behind the stage name, never disappoints listeners with his alternative R&B pop sound, and based on recent singles, fans will love the upcoming project.

3. Alanis Morrisette, Such Pretty Forks in the Road – To be released on 5/1

Alanis Morissette, everyone’s favorite queen of ‘90s grunge-y acoustic/alternative/singer-songwriter music, is finally back in the music game since 2008. Cult classic album, Jagged Little Pill, has received praise since its release in 1995, but more recently became the soundtrack of the music to new Broadway musical of the same name. The album and Broadway show alike have been absolutely acclaimed by critics; and after going over a decade without any new music from the Canadian singer/songwriter, fans are ecstatic to see what this new album, Such Pretty Forks in the Road, will be like.

As far as officially announced albums go, those three are definitely something to keep your eye on in 2020. But, there are even more artists who fans believe will release new albums this year, without official confirmation from the artists themselves. Here are the three albums that fans are really hoping to be released this year:

1. SZA

SZA has not formally confirmed that her third studio album will officially be released this year, but the R&B singer has definitely hinted at some new music for 2020. SZA has been killing it in the hip hop/R&B game since 2014 with album Z, which put SZA on the map. But it wasn’t until her 2017 album, Ctrl, that really garnered some popularity for the singer. After a vocal surgery in 2018 and brief musical hiatus, SZA has been posting tweets and Instagram stories hinting at new music, sometimes even posting pictures from the studio. SZA also talked about a hypothetical new album to be released this year with Kerwin Frost on his podcast episode with her back in August of 2019. Though no one is positive that this year brings a new SZA album, fans are extremely hopeful.

2. Phoebe Bridgers

Phoebe Bridgers has not officially announced a new album for this year, but she hasn’t released a solo album since her 2017 debut, Stranger in the Alps. Since, she has worked with artists Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, (who make up the trio of boy-genius) and her partner, Conor Oberst (who make up the duo of The Better Oblivion Community.) But Bridgers released a new single, “Garden Song” on February 26, 2020, so fans are hopeful that this single will be a teaser for a new album. Bridgers will be at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago this summer, so she is definitely an artist that should be on any alternative/indie fan’s radar. Fans are excited to see what 2020 brings Phoebe Bridgers and her soulful poetic acoustic music.

3. Lana Del Rey

It has only been a handful of months since the release of Lana Del Rey’s fifth studio album, Norman Fucking Rockwell!, but that is not stopping Del Rey. NFR! took the world by storm when it was released in late August of 2019, surprising many critics who don’t always commend her work. NFR! was an extremely successful project for Del Rey, working with producer Jack Antonoff seemed to bring some of the most authentic songwriting from the alternative solo persona Lana Del Rey (whose real name is Elizabeth Grant). Del Rey also has plans to release a spoken word poetry album sometime in 2020; originally it was supposed to be released in January, but with the Australian Bush Fire epidemic, Del Rey decided to push the project back. There is also talk of another musical album to be released, following the spoken word album and there is even a working title for the musical album, White Hot Forever. It will be interesting to see if Del Rey does ever release her spoken word album and whether it would come before or after the new music.

The song opens with the sound of a “shhhh,” immediately drawing people to stop and pay attention to the lyrics and song. Lead singer Bonnie Frasier draws you in by singing,

“I keep forgetting where I wanna go. And no, I don’t, I never feel at home. Yeah, yeah, feed in my throat like a leech. I guess I’ll keep, keep fleeing to my knees. And you’re the only one who ignites me easy. Yeah, yeah, feed in my throat like a leech. And just maybe my weak fingertips are better off burnin’ bridges.” 

Most of us have probably felt like we don’t know where we belong, so hearing those lyrics feels like an outstretched hand of someone else who knows the feeling. The song then turns to an upbeat chorus which is perfect to dance and let loose too.

“You better think with your mouth. Before you shout ’til you bleed. Yeah, yeah, feed in my throat like a leech. Watch what you’re telling yourself. What do you shout in your sleep?. Yeah, yeah, feed in my throat like a leech. Feed in my throat like shh!” 

Once again, the shh is a bit softer but, still demanding enough to hear the impact of it.

GRiZ: “Could U”

On February 6, “Could U” hit all of our favorite streaming services and social media platforms. Grant Kwiecinski himself (AKA GRiZ, duh!) took to Twitter the other day describing this latest jam as, “Funky, techy, bassy house vibes” and I couldn’t agree more. It has that signature funkiness that is always present in GRiZ songs– that high energy sound that grabs your shoulders and insists that you move around (no matter how weird it looks).

This new single came in a pack of two. He dropped an original and the Club Mix, and they both pack a punch (okay, I won’t lie, I can’t really tell them apart). There is an echoey element before the drop, that then bubbles up straight out of the speaker. Songs like this are so surreal when you pop in your headphones and crank the volume. It’s a totally different experience, especially compared to just playing it from a computer. Basically, check out “Could U” and seriously consider splurging on a concert or festival ticket to catch GRiZ in action when he returns to the states.

Louis The Child: “Don’t Mind”

Louis The Child (Robby Hauldren and Frederic Kennett) released their new single, “Don’t Mind” on January 31, shining some well-deserved light on our lives. The duo has been on quite the singles kick lately, putting out six in 2019. They continue that here in 2020 with this latest song. It certainly follows their usual thread of sunny-sounding, electronic pop, which is exactly what I’ve been craving lately. Listening to “Don’t Mind” on the way to class puts a spring in my step and a smile on my face.

I wouldn’t be surprised if every song represented in this article joined hands and ran off into the sunset together– the sunset being the cover art for this Louis The Child song. I would absolutely chase after them, happy to follow that rainbow road as far as it would take me. Hopefully, it would lead through winter and straight to California in time to catch “Don’t Mind” live this April.

San Holo: “Honest”

Sander van Dijck, known to us as San Holo, released a new song on January 31. Similar to much of his music, “Honest” gives me some gentle electronic vibes. He and Broods came together to create a perfect blend of indie-pop and EDM. This latest song truly coincides with San Holo’s “stay vibrant” philosophy, a phrase that grew in popularity in 2019. He promotes positivity and good energy as a spectrum, able to be represented by whatever percentage of “vibrance” you seem to be feeling. He tweeted yesterday, hinting at a “vibrant hotline” (whatever that entails, we don’t know yet), and the replies have been overwhelmingly positive.

This gushing and overflowing of positivity present on his timeline spills out in this new release. With 1 million streams in its first week, “Honest” is definitely a hint of warmth in this dreary February. San Holo is already touring, and if you want to kill two birds with one stone, he’ll be in Detroit with Louis The Child in May!
