Doja Cat Need To Know

Without a doubt Planet Her will be taking over the charts this summer. It’s a two for two hit for Doja Cat and thankfully we won’t be having to wait much longer for the rest of the album. Doja recently revealed the release date, the cover artwork and the tracklist for her Planet Her.

As expected, Planet Her has some notable guests, including SZA, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, JID, Young Thug, and more!

With the release of her latest single “Need To Know,” it seems like there’s a high chance of the Planet Her being a visual album. On Twitter, Doja answered several questions regarding the aesthetics of her two latest videos which seems to have a intergalactic theme. Doja then explained that there is some common lore between “Need To Know” and “Kiss Me More”

“I’ve always wanted to try things. I commend artists who stick to something. It feels pleasing aesthetically and very driven.”

After completely owning last year’s music scene, Doja Cat has confirmed to be nearly done with Planet Her. With an estimated release for late summer, she’s got a lot of fans anticipating several new hits. As the real first taste of the new album, Doja teamed up with SZA for the release of “Kiss Me More.” As expected, both the visuals and the song are aesthetically perfection.

“Kiss Me More” is a fun, infectious disco-infused pop single. It’s flirty while also focusing on the main topic of Planet Her, divine femininity.

The video follows an astronaut who explores a deserted pink-hued planet. While exploring the unknown territory, he stumbles upon two glamorous alien-like figures which end up being Doja and SZA. It then quickly shifts into a story reminiscent of Adam and Eve, the astronaut is seen eating the forbidden fruit and is transported into a sensual fantasy. He goes from a voyeur, to participant, and then into an unexpecting fallen victim to these beautiful alien creatures. The video is playful yet so pleasing to the eye. Everything is beautifully paced.

What Can We Expect From Planet Her?

This is the second song we’ve heard but, thus far, Planet Her is VERY promising and will definitely feature a variety of hits along with several possible features. So far there has been rumors of Ariana Grande, French Montana, and Megan Thee Stallion, among others, possibly being on the album. Without a doubt expect some hits from Doja this summer!

“For me, I want to try all these things, but I’m starting to learn what I’m falling into is a lot of the house, disco, vintage-y essences—that’s where my heart kind of lies. But I still am doing shit that I don’t understand. It’s still really fun!”

Pop princess Ariana Grande is working harder than ever! She just released her album, positions, at the end of October. But if you turn the clock backwards all the way to 2018, (which feels much longer than two years ago,) Grande had just released her album Sweetener, her and Mac Miller had just called it quits and she had recently moved on to Pete Davidson, (whom a track on the album was named after.) Following the release of that album, Grande went on a world tour, performing Sweetener all over the globe from March to December of 2019.

On Wednesday, December 9, Grande released the news that her Sweetener world tour video footage would be taken to Netflix later this month for a concert film. The film is titled “Excuse Me, I Love You,” inspired by lyrics from her song, “R.E.M,” and it will drop on Netflix on Monday, December 21.

Grande tweeted the news about the release of the film.

Will you be watching the Sweetener tour film “Excuse Me, I Love You?” Let us know in the comments!

With the end of the year quickly approaching, it is time to look back at what was released this year. Despite this year’s hardships, 2020 has been a great year for albums. Many artists have been able to portray the emotions of the collective, whether it be anger, sadness, helplessness, or joy – music was there to help us process the craziness around us.

Here are some albums that have been on repeat throughout this quarantined year. They are not necessarily the best albums to have come out, but they are immensely enjoyable and catchy to me.

Hayley Williams – Petals for Armor (May 8, 2020)

Petals for Armor - Wikipedia
Hayley Williams

Hayley William’s debut album Petals for Armor is a true display of William’s raw capability to be a chameleon of an artist. This album shattered any former boxed idea of William’s only being capable of “pop-rock.” Williams successfully experiments with funk, disco, and indie rock.  Petals for Armor is not only a display of her capability in music but also in insight into who Williams is and the brooding heartbreak she went through and the celebratory healing as she embraces her femininity.

Favorite songs: “Over Yet,” “Dead Horse,” “Simmer,” “Taken,” “Cinnamon,” “Pure Love,” and “Crystal Clear.”

Chloe X Halle – Ungodly Hour (June 12, 2020)

Ungodly Hour album review: Beyoncé proteges Chloe x Halle step up | EW.com
Chloe X Halle

This year was their year. Chloe X Halle were everywhere. They worked the heck out of their songs “Forgive Me” and “Do It,” but despite possibly overperforming it, every performance was fresh and new. The album was a revamp of R&B. Chloe X Halle kept the sound fresh despite blending the best of the different eras. Ungodly Hour “demonstrated Chole x Halle’s immense talent both lyrically and artistically as every song was written and produced by the duo.”

Favorite songs: “Do It,” “Forgive Me,” “Baby Girl,” “Ungodly Hour,” and “Lonely.”

Ariana Grande – Positions (October 30, 2020)

Review: On Positions, Ariana Grande Is Fully in Her Feelings | Time
Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande’s Position is probably her most open album to date. Grande discusses her explicit giddy romance, heartbreak, and the search for peace and tranquility with herself. Although it isn’t as much of a classic as Sweetener and Thank U, Next, it is still an enjoyable album.

Favorite songs: “34+35,” “positions,” “shut up,” and “pov.”

Poppy – I Disagree (January 10, 2020)

Poppy - I Disagree | DIY
Poppy

Poppy’s I Disagree was a transformative nu-metal album for her character. Previously her music was very bubblegum pop, as was her character until this point. I Disagree is very much heavily influenced by the evolution and change to the “Poppy” identity. It is much more grimier as a huge focus of the album is on vengeance, rebirth, and freedom.

Favorite songs: “BLOODMONEY,” “Don’t Go Outside,” and “I Disagree.”

Dua Lipa – Future Nostalgia (March 27, 2020)

Future Nostalgia - Wikipedia
Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia is full of sophisticated pop-funk and disco tracks. It came out at the weirdest time, at the peak and start of COVID-13. It was such a celebratory album full of guiltless dance anthems at the peak of quarantining. It was strangely timed but an enjoyable album. Dua Lipa herself hinted with the name that it is an instant classic, and I can’t disagree.

Favorite songs: “Good In Bed,” “Break My Heart,” “Pretty Please,” Future Nostalgia,” and “Don’t Start Now.”

Deftones – Ohms (September 25, 2020)

Deftones: Ohms Album Review | Pitchfork
Deftones

Ohms is easily one of the best sounding albums of the year. Moreno’s voice is alluringly dreamy and romantic while Stephen Carpenter brings in the metallic sludge. There is a balance between the tension of the two that brings out a raw and crooning atmosphere. Ohms tussles between metal, post-hardcore, and experimental. Yet, it’s still very familiar to fans of Deftones despite the fully transcending genre. There is a clear balance of experimenting while staying true to their longtime fans.”

Favorite songs: “Ohms,” “The Spell of Mathematics,” and “Genesis.”

Other recommendations:

Allie X’s Cape God, Miley Cyrus’s Plastic Hearts, Rina Sawayama’s SAWAYAMA, Ashnikko’s Daisy, Santino Le Saint’s Rage of Angels, Roses & Revolution’s Under the Spell, and artists, Tate McRae, Girl Ultra, and YENDRY.

Now that October is over and done with it, is officially Christmas season! Or so it seems with the recent release from Meghan Trainor and the Jonas Brothers.

Meghan Trainor was subtly hinting about the album on TikTok with the hashtag #AVeryTrainorChristmas ❄ and the decorative background in her TikTok videos. It wasn’t until the day before Halloween that Trainor released the album, which consists of mostly Christmas classics with some original music.

Trainor, always being a fan of Christmas, talked to Extra about her album, her love for Christmas classics, such as “Last Christmas,” and the exciting news of her pregnancy!

“I’m a Christmas baby, it’s always been a dream of mine to release a Christmas Album and to do it with my family makes it that much better… Songs featuring my family are like permanent memories that I get to replay all the time. Earth, Fire, & Wind and Seth MacFarlane are two of my family’s all-time-favorites – we worship the ground they walk on – so to get them to feature on this album still doesn’t feel real. Best Christmas Present Ever!”

Stream A Very Trainor Christmas here:

Much like Trainor, the Jonas Brothers seem to love the nostalgia and happiness that Christmas brings. But unlike Trainor, they only released one single titled, “I Need You Christmas.” The single got a raved review from Sophie Turner who claimed the single made her cry.

Stream “I Need You Christmas” here:

Are you feeling that Christmas spirit already? Or do you think it’s far too early to be decking the halls?

If you already are in a jolly and holly mood, I recommend listening to Ariana Grande’s Christmas album, “Christmas & Chill.” Every year I blast the heck out of “December.”

Grande also shared a track list for the album a few days ago via Twitter:

Positions will include 14 songs with features from Doja Cat, The Weeknd, and Ty Dolla $ign. Grande has kept many of the details of the album quiet, tweeting that she doesn’t have any favorite particular songs from the album, but rather that this album is her favorite project of her own work to date.

Megan Thee Stallion has been using her quarantine time effectively since the very beginning and the fruits of her labor will soon pay off.

Early Saturday morning, Megan Thee Stallion reminded her followers that new music is soon on the way.

“I’ve been recording. That’s the best thing about quarantine. I would have been working on it anyway, but what else am I going to be doing right now. I’ve just been writing and we set up a little studio in here. So, we’re going to have new music for when we can go back outside.”

If you missed the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, which essentially took place for artists virtually on August 30, here is everything you need to know.

Although artists didn’t get to stunt their looks on an in-person red carpet, or perform for the millions of viewers to a live and in-person audience, several artists did perform at the show. Highlights included Doja Cat, The Weeknd, BTS, and more. The most show-stopping performance of the night had to go to the medley of “Rain On Me” and other songs from Chromatica by Lady Gaga featuring Ariana Grande. Watch the incredible performance below:

Video credits to Youtube.com/MTV

Lady Gaga stole the show with five award wins and several more nominations. She also had incredible outfits and even better masks, which, in true Gaga fashion, included several outfit changes throughout the night.

Although the VMAs were primarily pre-recorded, host Keke Palmer did a great job. Palmer also paid homage to Chadwick Boseman, who passed away on August 28. The award show also made it a point to call attention to the Black Lives Matter movement, specifically demanding justice for both Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor.

The VMAs are iconic for the start of the Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West beef, and Nicki Minaj bluntly posing the question, “Miley, what’s good?” to Miley Cyrus. Obviously, with the award show being primarily pre-recorded and practically virtual, there weren’t really any iconic moments this year. With that being said, despite the fact that the 2020 VMAs didn’t get to happen in person, the award show was overall entertaining and smooth-running.

As quarantine trudges into the summer months, many artists have been continuing to release new music. Recently, several new singles have come out; here are five of the best songs (coincidentally all by awesome women artists) that you need to check out!

  1. “I See You” by Phoebe Bridgers

Indie singer-songwriter, Phoebe Bridgers, dropped her newest single, “I See You,” on May 19. Her new album, Punisher, is set to release on June 19. “I See You” is a song in which Bridgers recalls her breakup with the drummer in her band, Marshall Vore, who co-wrote the song and plays drums on it. If you’re a fan of Bridgers’ previous discography, be sure to check out her new album, Punisher, once it is released next month.

  1. 19” by Madisenxoxo

Up-and-coming alternative singer-songwriter, Madisenxoxo, has been blowing up on TikTok and Spotify. Her newest single, “19,” has the same well-crafted songwriting as her previous single “Baby in Blue,” with a slightly more uplifting mood to the song. If you’re a fan of artists like Clairo or Soccer Mommy, Madisenxoxo is an artist who should definitely be on your radar.

  1. “Rain On Me (with Ariana Grande)” by Lady Gaga feat. Ariana Grande

Lady Gaga is joined by fellow pop icon, Ariana Grande, in the second and newest single off of her upcoming album, Chromatica. The album drops tomorrow, May 29, and will be Gaga’s sixth studio album. Fans have been long awaiting a new album, since the 2016 country-pop album, Joanne. “Rain On Me (with Ariana Grande)” is a pop dance anthem that is sure to be the soundtrack to summer 2020.

  1. “Don’t Wanna” by Haim

The alternative band of sisters, Haim, is back with their newest single, “Don’t Wanna,” from their upcoming album. Women in Music Pt. III is set to come out on June 26. In this song, the band channels the sound of their first album, Days Are Gone, from 2013. The bassline in the chorus of “Don’t Wanna” has a familiarity to it which fans of that album are definitely going to enjoy. After releasing three songs and three bonus tracks from the upcoming album, Haim listeners are excited to hear what’s in store on the new album.

  1. “I Think You’re Alright” by Soccer Mommy

Indie singer-songwriter, Soccer Mommy, launched a project called “Soccer Mommy & Friends Singles Series” in which she has asked four musician friends to swap songs, covering each other’s music. In the first installment, which was released on May 21, Soccer Mommy was joined by singer Jay Som. Soccer Mommy covered Jay Som’s “I Think You’re Alright,” while Jay Som covered Soccer Mommy’s song “lucy.” Every two weeks, Soccer Mommy will be releasing more additions of her Singles Series and will be joined by Beabadoobee, Andrew VanWyngarden, and Beach Bunny. Soccer Mommy is releasing her singles series as an album once all of the additions are released. All profits from Bandcamp sales of the “Soccer Mommy & Friends Singles Series” album will be donated to Oxfam’s COVID-19 relief fund.
