]]>After completely owning last year’s music scene, Doja Cat has confirmed to be nearly done with Planet Her. With an estimated release for late summer, she’s got a lot of fans anticipating several new hits. As the real first taste of the new album, Doja teamed up with SZA for the release of “Kiss Me More.” As expected, both the visuals and the song are aesthetically perfection.
“Kiss Me More” is a fun, infectious disco-infused pop single. It’s flirty while also focusing on the main topic of Planet Her, divine femininity.
The video follows an astronaut who explores a deserted pink-hued planet. While exploring the unknown territory, he stumbles upon two glamorous alien-like figures which end up being Doja and SZA. It then quickly shifts into a story reminiscent of Adam and Eve, the astronaut is seen eating the forbidden fruit and is transported into a sensual fantasy. He goes from a voyeur, to participant, and then into an unexpecting fallen victim to these beautiful alien creatures. The video is playful yet so pleasing to the eye. Everything is beautifully paced.
This is the second song we’ve heard but, thus far, Planet Her is VERY promising and will definitely feature a variety of hits along with several possible features. So far there has been rumors of Ariana Grande, French Montana, and Megan Thee Stallion, among others, possibly being on the album. Without a doubt expect some hits from Doja this summer!
“For me, I want to try all these things, but I’m starting to learn what I’m falling into is a lot of the house, disco, vintage-y essences—that’s where my heart kind of lies. But I still am doing shit that I don’t understand. It’s still really fun!”

Megan Thee Stallion has been using her quarantine time effectively since the very beginning and the fruits of her labor will soon pay off.
Early Saturday morning, Megan Thee Stallion reminded her followers that new music is soon on the way.
“I’ve been recording. That’s the best thing about quarantine. I would have been working on it anyway, but what else am I going to be doing right now. I’ve just been writing and we set up a little studio in here. So, we’re going to have new music for when we can go back outside.”

Megan Thee Stallion just made her return with “Don’t Stop,” and now she’s teasing even more music. Unfortunately, Megan Thee Stallion didn’t offer much else for fans to go off of, but despite the lack of release date fans are still excited for the next drop.

]]>In the speech, Megan preaches that we must protect and love black women and black men. This speech followed audio clips of newscasts, which call for the condemnation of Kentucky Attorney General, Daniel Cameron, who let three officers walk free of murder charges for the death of Breonna Taylor.
We need to protect our Black women. And love our Black women. Cuz at the end of the day, we need our Black women. We need to protect our Black men and stand up for our Black men because at the end of the day, we’re tired of seeing hashtags of our Black men.
-Megan Thee Stallion
Watch the performance below:
Megan also performed “Don’t Stop,” with rapper Young Thug later on in the episode, not to mention her small appearances in two of the sketches on the show. Overall, fans on Twitter were very impressed by Megan’s performance and the use of her platform to share such an important message.

]]>Don’t be fooled by the limited content of her Spotify profile- Sally Sossa may be a new face on the Houston scene, but she’s already established herself as a prolific talent. The Houston rapper had a busy 2019, with her mixtape, Life of Sossa, and multiple music videos that racked up thousands of views across Youtube and Worldstar- all of which are now conspicuously absent from the internet. Maybe her new label scheming to make her eligible for Artist of the Year 2020? She has my vote.
Whatever the reason for her mass music exodus. (Probably legal uncertainty in the wake of getting signed. But, if she’s nominated in 2021, I told you so). Her new single, “Who You Are,” is catchy enough to make you forget about it for the moment. It has all the 808s of a summer banger driving an introspective flow full of wistful teen angst. Sossa somehow manages to seem simultaneously exceptional and relatable, her lyrics detailing personal shortcomings and successes with the same honest candor.
“I don’t really know who I am but I made it this far / Now I’m a superstar / So it’s okay to not know who you are,” Sossa raps with the wisdom of someone who has found their place in the world, but doesn’t forget how difficult it was to get there. Listen for yourself below.

]]>On top of calling out the blank lack of empathy for herself and other black women, she cleared the air on what happened the night of her shooting. She wrote on Instagram, “The narrative that is being reported about Sunday’s morning events are inaccurate and I’d like to set the record straight.”
She continued: “On Sunday morning, I suffered gunshot wounds, as a result of a crime that was committed against me and done with the intention to physically harm me. I was never arrested, the police officers drove me to the hospital where I underwent surgery to remove the bullets. I’m incredibly thankful to be alive and that I’m expected to make a full recovery, but it was important for me to clarify the details about this traumatic night. I’m currently focused on my recovery, so I can return back to my life and back to making music as soon as possible.”
Fellow rapper, Tory Lanez, is rumored to have been the one that shot Megan Thee Stallion. This has not been confirmed by Megan but she did unfollow him on social media and her producer Lil Ju Made Da Beat has been attacking Lanez on Twitter. Tory Lanes was also arrested early Sunday morning by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Lanez was charged with carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle and booked into the Hollywood Jail. He was able to post bond and was released later that day. Lanez is scheduled to appear in court on October 13.

]]>Sister trio HAIM, the alternative-pop band, originally announced an April 24, 2020 release date for their upcoming third studio album, Women In Music Pt. III, after dropping The Steps EP on March 3. This EP is comprised of four singles which the band released individually, starting in summer 2019. With the growing threat of the Coronavirus pandemic, the band ultimately made the decision to push back their album release date to June 26, 2020. Luckily for fans, some good news also came with this bad news, the release of the single, “I Know Alone” on April 29, 2020. The single was accompanied by a music video of the sisters dancing from a social distance from one another. This newest single is more on the techno/experimental- alternative side in comparison to what some HAIM listeners may expect, but with a solid EP under their belt, it seems that this upcoming album will not disappoint.
Charli XCX’s first quarantine single “forever” a grungy pop love song, came out on April 9, while “claws”, a synthy but super catchy pop love song was released on April 23, 2020. The singer-songwriter has been working on releasing music from quarantine for an upcoming album, which Charli tweeted about. The album’s working title and release date are how i’m feeling now, coming out May 15, 2020. Charli also recruited her friends, three fellow multidisciplinary artists/musicians, Caroline Polacheck, Seth Bogart, and Regards Coupables to design the cover art for her first single.
Charli has been sharing at-home photoshoots with fans via Twitter, and having artists put their own touch on the photos, which Charli than uses for album and single cover art. Overall, Charli XCX has been steadily releasing new music; exciting her fans via social media by including them in her process of making an album from scratch at home.
In a very Beyoncé–esque way, this single came about with absolutely no warning to fans. Beyoncé joined her fellow Houston rapper, Megan Thee Stallion, for a surprise remix to the song that’s taken Tik Tok by storm. The “Savage Remix [ft. Beyonce]” was released on April 29, 2020, and includes all-new verses from Megan. Fans were hoping for a collaboration since photos of the artists together at a New Year’s Eve party surfaced at the beginning of 2020, and this remix definitely surpasses expectations.

Although no one knows how long a collaboration has been in the works, the Nicki Minaj remix of Doja Cat’s equally Tik Tok viral song, “Say So,” wasn’t announced until the same day as “Savage Remix [ft. Beyoncé],” which came out hours prior at midnight. While I’m personally a fan of all four icons, it was disappointing that the “Say So [Remix ft. Nicki Minaj] recycled the same verses from Doja Cat’s original version of the song. Nonetheless, fans were so excited to hear the Barb queen, Nicki Minaj, rap alongside Doja Cat.
Sven Gamsky, the talent behind one-man band, Still Woozy, released his new single, “Window”, on April 17, 2020. Still, Woozy was supposed to be touring right now, but instead has been spending quarantine making music from his personal recording studio in his garage. “Window” combines an acoustic sound with a funky beat, using unique sound effects, like that of a creaking floor, as part of the beat. Still Woozy also recently covered fellow one-man-band, Tame Impala’s song, “The Less I Know The Better” on his YouTube channel.
Every indie music listener’s favorite quintessential alternative rock band, The Strokes, finally released their sixth and newest album, The New Abnormal, on April 10, 2020. Marking this as their first full-length album since their 2013, Comedown Machine. The band, which is lead by Julian Casablancas, lead singer and primary songwriter, released three singles in preparation for this album, starting in February of this year. The album’s sound as a whole is nothing super brand new or groundbreaking for the indie rock band. With that being said, the album is cohesive and won’t disappoint true fans of The Strokes. Personal favorite songs include “The Adults Are Talking,” “Bad Decisions,” and “Eternal Summer.”
R&B music singer-songwriter, Kali Uchis, came out with her newest EP, To Feel Alive, on April 24, 2020. Check out this awesome review, where Maddy goes in-depth about each song on the four-track EP, as well as the EP’s motifs as a whole.
Phoebe Bridgers, indie/folk singer-songwriter, has released two singles this spring in preparation for her newest album, Punisher, which comes out on June 19, 2020. Her first single of this year, “Garden Song,” was released at the end of February. It is a slower, acoustic song, in which Bridger’s lyrics beautifully reflect on her past and future. Her second single, “Kyoto,” was released on April 9, 2020. This single is more uplifting than the last, featuring drums and horns, rather than the sounds of just an acoustic guitar. In this single, Bridgers discusses the cycle of her desire to travel when she is home, and her desire to be at home while she is traveling on tour. If you’re a fan of indie bands like Bright Eyes or The Head and The Heart, or alternative female singer-songwriters like Soccer Mommy or Lana Del Rey, you’ll definitely want to keep your eye out for Phoebe Bridgers’ newest album.
As a special Earth Day treat, everyone’s favorite country-pop princess, Kacey Musgraves, surprised fans with “Oh What A World 2.0 – Earth Day Edition.” This song is a remix of Musgraves’ song “Oh What A World” from her Grammy-winning 2018 album, Golden Hour. This version is an almost-tropical inspired remix, with a slightly different beat, featuring bongos. It’s definitely a cool and unique remix for a song by a primarily country-based singer-songwriter.
Another one-man band, George Van Den Broek, behind Yellow Days, just came out with the new single, “Treat You Right,” on May 1, 2020. The indie R&B artist has a similar sound to those of Cosmo Pyke, HOMESHAKE, and Banes World. The UK-based artist hasn’t released a full-length album since his 2017 Is Everything Okay In Your World?, but releases individual singles quite frequently, so we won’t be surprised to hear more Yellow Days music as time in quarantine progresses.

]]>Many musical creators have continued to churn out new sounds from the comforts of their own home studios. Several artists, including Rex Orange County, have used their platforms to perform virtual stripped-down concerts via Instagram Live. British alternative singer, Rex Orange County, performed a full-length one and a half hour-long show, now available to watch on YouTube.
Singer-songwriter, John Legend, was joined by his wife, model and cooking influencer extraordinaire, Chrissy Teigen, who sat atop their piano for an almost hour-long in-home concert. Everyone’s favorite celebrity mom was serenaded as she wore a towel, drank wine, and requested her husband play the theme song to the reality TV show, “Vanderpump Rules.”
Speaking of recent live stripped-down concerts, NPR’s Tiny Desk Series has been steadily releasing more new additions, pre-recorded in their Washington D.C. offices before the pandemic struck. Recently, bigger names such as Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, The Jonas Brothers, and Megan Thee Stallion have done Tiny Desk shows, but the series has been producing concerts by artists of all genres for over a decade, and there are bound to be a few from your favorite artists. Some of my personal favorites are Jorja Smith, Mac Miller, Toro y Moi, The Cranberries, Phoebe Bridgers, Maggie Rogers, Rex Orange County and Tyler, the Creator. There are quite literally hundreds of installments, and there is no better time than now to watch them and discover new artists. Tiny Desk has even begun to invite artists to record their episodes from home, so new episodes will still be coming out, even throughout quarantine!
Another way to fill your free time with music is by making more playlists. Personally, I make monthly playlists of whatever music I am listening to at that time, but I also like to make playlists for different moods, genres, occasions, etc. But if you’re feeling lazy and want to listen to a pre-made playlist, three of my favorites that I’ve put together are as follows:
This is my playlist of my childhood throwback bops, this is great to listen to if you want to put yourself in a better mood and distract yourself from the Corona craze for an hour or two as you listen. This playlist has got everything from Britney Spears to Nicki Minaj to Lady Gaga, and it goes especially well with butterfly clips and Olsen Twin movies.
As its name would suggest, this playlist is quite literally on the opposite end of the spectrum, it’s for if you want to wallow in your sadness. Everyone’s favorite emotional songs are on here, from “Mystery of Love,” to “Call Me by Your Name,” to “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac and so much more. You’ll want a fresh box of tissues for this one.
As the extremely bland title of this playlist would explain, this is my sleeping playlist. Since being quarantined for going on two weeks, my routine and sleep schedule have completely gone amiss. If you’re one of the many people who, like me, needs music or podcasts to fall asleep, this one’s for you. It’s filled with calm folk songs by Fleet Foxes and Sufjan Stevens. As far as podcasts go, my favorites are NPR’s This American Life and for all the fellow true crime fans, Crime Junkie.
This time has not been easy for any of us, but it is important to spend your time enveloped in your passions as much as possible. So with more time, (and soap) on our hands than ever before, now is the perfect time and opportunity to discover new music.

]]>She claimed that when it came to talks of renegotiating her contract, things got sour between her and 1501 Certified Entertainment, an indie label in Houston. She admitted on Twitter that despite reading her contract, she did not understand all the contractual verbiage, so when she signed with Roc Nation and they provided a different management, they brought this all to her attention. According to TMZ, “the most outrageous terms of her contract, at least in her eyes… she claims the deal calls for 1501 Certified to get 60% of her recording income. The remaining 40% goes to her, but she has to use that to pay engineers, mixers and featured artists who work on the songs.”
“I’m signed to independent labels. I’m not signed to them big-a** labels these other artists are signed to, and they get pushes, and they get placements, and they do all kinds of s*it. So anything you see me do is because I woke up and did it that day… To new artists coming out, I just want to say: It might seem good, it might sound good…but you definitely got to read. Don’t sign nothing without no real lawyer, and make sure your lawyers is not the lawyers [of your label.]

The topic instantly started the trend #FREETHEESTALLION on Twitter. Since the topic trended, Megan Thee Stallion has been retweeting fans calling for her to be allowed to release music.
At 6:35 p.m. Megan Thee Stallion tweeted out that she will be releasing new music on Friday. According to a retweet on her page, which was confirmed by TMZ, Megan Thee Stallion sued the record label and a district judge granted her a temporary restraining order which will allow her to drop new music and prohibit 1501 Certified Entertainment from talking about her in a defamatory manner.
