British recording artist Elliot Gleave – better recognized by his stage name Example – debuted his newest single “Whisky Story” earlier this week. The rapper and singer has an impressive track record, with four top ten UK singles and two number one albums on the UK dance charts. Though fairly unknown in the US, Gleave has collaborated with artists who may be more recognizable to American music fans – including Calvin Harris, Tinie Tempah, and Pet Shop Boys.
You can tell that his latest release is a great club tune straight from the start, with its upbeat tempo and some of Example’s signature clever lyrics to boot.
One of my favorite lines from “Whisky Story” goes:
“She lies there on the sofa every morning like Lorraine”, (Lorraine being a popular British morning talk show hostess.)
Although his early works were more heavily influenced by hip hop, Example has since branched out from rapping and added more singing to his songs. Since the release of his first album in 2004, his style has evolved into an amazing blend of electronic music, rap, and sung vocals. “Whisky Story” is a perfect showcase of Example’s talents. The track has a pulsing beat that will invite listeners to move their bodies, both on and off the dance floor. And you can expect to have this song stuck in your head, special thanks to the memorable hook:
“Oh darling, let’s stay up all night, drinking whisky, telling stories, I can keep you satisfied”
