“The Album” Celebrates Motherhood, Sexuality, and Vulnerability

Teyana Taylor’s, “The Album,” opens up with a very private, yet tender, recording from Taylor’s husband, Iman Shumpert, proposing to her. From there, it transitions to his phone call to 911 as the birth of their child happens on their bathroom floor. It is a very voyeuristic view of Taylor’s private life as she goes from a wife to a mother.

“The Album”

The Album” switches its tone by focusing on Taylor’s ability to be a sexual, despite being a mother and wife. Taylor seemingly wants to take away the negative stigma that is assigned to women once they become mothers. “1800-One-Night,” “How You Want It (ft. Big Combs),” and “69” embrace Taylor’s sexuality. Each of those songs are very explicit about Taylor’s desires. She is not shy to share her passion but, she also shares several tender moments within the albums, such as her single, “Wake Up Love.” Taylor is accompanied by her husband IMAN in the beautiful ballad dedicated to him and their daughter. It is also within the music video for “Wake Up Love” that she surprised everyone by revealing her second pregnancy.

Taylor’s voice throughout the album is very flirtatious and playful. She is able to pull off seductive ballads that haul her listeners in with her silky smooth voice. The album is quintessential R&B that is very reminiscent of the early ’90s, but throughout the album, she also explores different avenues which feature Afrobeats, modern hip-hop, smooth jazz, and spoken word.
