From Rookie to Rockstar- New Billie Eilish, “wish you were gay”

“17-year-old global pop-phenom Billie Eilish is on the fast track to becoming one of the biggest stars…”

With over 32 Million monthly listeners, and a current rank at 28th in the world, Spotify is spot-on when they say Billie Eilish is on her way to becoming one of the world’s top artists.

Yesterday on Instagram, Eilish teased her 13.8 Million followers with a snippet of her new single titled, “wish you were gay,”

“Don’t say I’m not your type, just say that I’m not your preferred sexual orientation.”

These lyrics that she included in the sample on Instagram define this new track, expressing feelings Billie holds that many of us may not have been able to presume. However, with her rising popularity and rebellious persona, Billie Eilish has proven herself to be just that- indefinable. In an interview early January with NME, Billie says,

“I’m the type of person if you tell me to stop doing something, I’m going to do the opposite.”

A big part of what has made her career skyrocket, is her originality. With chilling YouTube videos like “when the party’s over,” and “you should see me in a crown,” she’s been able to effortlessly lure viewers (including myself) to witness and be apart of her unconventional creativity.

When it comes to her creative process, Billie maintains a “fuck it” attitude, and aims to go beyond anything that other artists would even think to consider. She uses her own personal preferences as a platform for imagination, and takes it to new lengths. Something that Billie loves is horror, and she explains to COS (Consequence of Sound) journalist, Lake Schatz, why she has such an admiration for being scared. She says,

“It’s just like … I don’t know … That’s a hard question. I like being scared. I’m sort of a masochist, I like being hurt, I like being scared, I like being flipped out. It’s like a high for me for some reason. Some people just can’t stand being scared. They don’t want to see anything that’s gonna make them flip out. They don’t want to do anything that just freaks them out a little bit. But I — and especially recently and stuff I’m working on now — am completely the opposite, where the videos and the stuff we’re working on right now, all the things that have sort of flipped me out, I’ve started to get closer than I’ve ever gotten to anything before.”

Billie Eilish has always been one to think outside-of-the-box, and today, we get to be apart of more of it. Her new single, that dropped today at 9 A.M. PST/11 A.M. CST, is now available to stream on Spotify.

Personally, I’ll be playing both “wish you were gay” and “bury a friend” on repeat until her next anticipated album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” drops.
