What’s Going on with Scooter Braun and Taylor Swift?

The music industry is a very complex industry. There is a lot to understand when it comes to helping artists become successful. The industry itself can make it tricky for an artist to succeed, especially when it becomes all about the money and forgetting about what the artist wants for their career. I became interested in learning about the industry when I was in college and trying to understand what an artist has to do to survive it.

Taylor Swift went on social media last Sunday evening to discuss the injustices that occur behind the scenes in the industry. She has been a part of several public issues with other artist and streaming services and has been very open to defend her music and success. She posted an Instagram story that directed her followers to her Tumblr blog where she wrote a lengthy note about her current situation with Braun’s Ithaca Holdings in which they agreed to acquire Big Machine Label, which includes the entire catalog that Taylor released through Scott Brochetta’s label.

“Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.” Swift wrote

She directly addresses Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta, both who have worked with countless other artists in the industry. In her statement, she explains why she is upset and how it brought her back to, “the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at Braun’s hands for years.”

“This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept,” Swift wrote.

This can be the case for many young musicians who often might go in blind when signing contracts. At such a young age and especially someone who wants to make it in the music industry, being able to get a label to back you up is a huge step to get your music out there. Yet, understanding the contracts that have to be signed is super important. Taylor also adds later that she hopes any other aspiring artist don’t make that mistake in not knowing what they are getting into.

Many artists such as Iggy Azalea, Camila Cabello, Brendon Urie, and many more have taken to social media to show support for Taylor. There are celebrities who are defending Braun and his reputation.

This issue brings a concern within the music industry which I hope moves forward in the hopes that an artist can rightfully have their music be theirs. Artists deserve the craft that they pour their soul and emotions onto.

What are your thoughts on the situation?

I am a student at UIC studying Communications and Music. Started singing and playing instruments when I was in high school and fell in love. I love going to concerts and talking to people about music.
