Breaking Out ‘The Box’

Music is constantly evolving. Most of the genres of music we listen to have been around for quite some time, but probably differ in sound greatly from earlier music classified in the same categories. This is a result of artist’s looking different places for influences. One artist that comes to mind is the up and coming rap artist Roddy Ricch.

Roddy Ricch is a 21-year-old Compton, California native. Roddy has been in the rap game for some time, but has only recently experienced a uncanny rise in popularity.

I first heard Roddy on “Racks in the Middle,” by Nipsey Hustle. The two artist shared similar backgrounds which ultimately led to them working together. They were recognized at first, but grew even more popular after the death of Nipsey Hustle. Roddy provides the chorus for the song and shows off his very unique singing voice.

This led me to believe he was a singer, but Roddy mostly raps, and from time to time he does a combination of the two. Earlier this year in an interview, Roddy listed Young Thug and Future as his main musical influences, and this makes sense once you see some of this risks he takes in his music.

Roddy’s Recent Success

Roddy Ricch’s latest album, Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial is a excellent display of his musical creativity. The album speaks to Roddy’s experiences in the streets and life, while testing the limits of the genres of Rap, R&B and Gospel. The response to the album has been all good so far for the Atlantic artist.

According to Billboard, Please Excuse Me for being Antisocial is the #1 album, and the #1 song is Roddy Ricch’s hit “The Box” which beat out Justin Bieber’s “Yummy,” despite him soliciting fan support for the songs streams.

Roddy Ricch is demanding to be recognized as a great songwriter and one of the new leaders in musical culture, and I think it’s about time we listen to him.
