With Historic Emmy Win, John Legend Becomes Youngest to Achieve EGOT

On Sunday, September 9th, at The Creative Arts Emmy Awards in LA, John Legend became the youngest performer to earn the coveted EGOT status by winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and a Tony award.

Many of today’s biggest stars are not one trick ponies, but often directors, actors, comedians, writers, and musicians. Take Donald Glover’s work on his show Atlanta as protagonist Earnest Marks and his work in the rap game as Childish Gambino. Or, look at Jordan Peele, who’s recent smash hit Get Out helped him cross the gap from television comedy to big screen suspense.

Hollywood heavyweights are flexing more than just one muscle everywhere you look. Now, R&B star John Legend has proven that he’s no exception.

Legend, 39, added the Emmy to his collection for his work as producer on Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and writer Tim Rice were also awarded, joining Legend as the newest members of the EGOT club.

Legend is also the first black man to win all four awards, making the achievement doubly historic.

Legend took to Instagram to celebrate with this triumphant picture.

On Monday, September 17, Saturday Night Live players, Michael Che and Colin Jost will host the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards live in Los Angeles, CA. Legend is up for yet another award for his role as Jesus Christ himself in NBC’s recreation of the same Broadway play. The prime time awards will air at 5 PM PT on NBC, 7 PM Chicago time.
