Billboard’s 10 Best Remixes of 2018 Review

Billboard has released their list of this year’s ten best dance/electronic remixes!

2018 brought dozens of memorable originals across all genres. We heard several party anthems from Marshmello, and Martin Garrix, and “sad bops” from Mark Ronson and Khalid. This year was another big one for Latin-infused songs like Cardi B’s “I Like It.”

In a year rife with political stressors and upsetting news around the world, Billboard’s list reminds us that it’s not all bad. We can still lose ourselves in our favorite songs, and when those songs get old? We can lose ourselves all over again in the remixes that transform them into something new.

With each remix from Billboard’s list, check out a similar song suggestion that is sure to help you ring in the new year on a high note!

Axwell Ingrosso, “Dreamer” (Matisse & Sadko Remix)

Uplifting lyrics about dreams and promises, that classic thump thump of the kick drum, what more could you ask for from a feel-good anthem? Matisse & Sadko do a great job holding onto the original’s unfiltered, optimistic energy while boosting it’s happiness factor. By simplifying the beat, however, the Russian duo may have lost some of the original magic.

Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin, “I Like It” (Dillon Francis Remix)

“I Like It” is one of five singles that came out of this year’s Invasion of Privacy, an album that debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart in April. If you liked the original version, but wished it was just a little faster, you’re in luck. Moombahton maestro Dillon Francis knew not to mess with a good thing, so he kept his changes small which freshened up this fan favorite without tarnishing it.

Kygo Feat. Justin Jesso, “Stargazing” (Kaskade Remix)

Chicago vocalist, Justin Jesso works his way up to a stellar chorus that makes this song shine. Both the original and Kaskade’s rework are tons of fun. Can’t go wrong playing this remix on the car ride home from a long day of work.

LSD, “Audio” (CID Remix)

EDM supergroup LSD, made up of Labrinth, Sia, and Diplo, fails to deliver anything spectacular with “Audio.” Back in May, the group released “Genius” which was catchy but forgettable. “Audio” is a similar scenario; a catchy beat and melody that feels like a cookie cutter attempt at dance floor fame. Unfortunately, CID’s sped-up remix is not enough to save this song.

MC Fioti, “Bum Bum Tam Tam” (Jax Jones Remix)

MC Fioti and Co. released “Bum Bum Tam Tam” in March of 2017. It samples Bach’s, “Partita in A Minor for Solo Flute,” a classical piece that gives a unique airy sound to this modern dance song. The original song’s music video is currently the most-viewed Brazilian music video, and Youtube’s 32nd most-liked video. The Jax Jones remix likely won’t be restoring the song to its former glory, but we won’t complain when we hear it in the club.

Papa Roach, “Last Resort” (Kayzo Rework)

Okay this one is… in a league of its own. I’m not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing. After it’s 2000 debute, Papa Roach’s biggest song, “Last Resort” has been kept alive through meme and parody. Kayzo’s sightly slower, bass-heavy rework could be perfect for your next gym session, cleaning montage, or mountain dew-fueled gaming marathon.

Pnau, “Changa” (Blanke Remix)

On a much more mellow note, Blanke’s remix of “Changa” is slowed down and thrilling. By turning down the tempo, Blanke helps the song breathe andvlets its full flavors come out.

Shawn Mendes, “Lost In Japan” (Zedd Remix)

Shawn Mendes’s “Lost in Japan” is smooth and silky. With the suave confidence (and half the age) of Bruno Mars, the 20-year-old Mendes sounds like a seasoned pro on this track. Zedd’s remix injects some buzz, while holding onto the gentle piano sections.

“Come Grind With Me” by The Vamps

Silk City Feat. Dua Lipa, “Electricity” (The Black Madonna)

Legends Mark Ronson and Diplo put their heads together to create “Electricity,” a modern nod to classic house music. The Black Madonna stretches the original song out over a simple, delicious beat that’s sure to motivate even the most modest dancer.

Travis Scott, “Sicko Mode” (Skrillex Remix)

Skrillex adds some electronic growl to the back end of Travis Scott’s anthem. Behind every bass thump is a robotic pulse that makes Scott’s verses even sicker.
