Megan Thee Stallion Uses SNL Performance to Share an Important Message

On October 3, NBC’s Saturday Night Live came back to stages in studio 8H at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Chris Rock hosted the season 46 premiere with rapper Megan Thee Stallion as the musical guest. Megan took to the stage to perform her song “Savage (Remix),” and during an instrumental break, she delivered a short speech. It started with the visual and sound effects of gunshots, a reference to the altercation in which musician, Tory Lanez, shot Megan this past July.

In the speech, Megan preaches that we must protect and love black women and black men. This speech followed audio clips of newscasts, which call for the condemnation of Kentucky Attorney General, Daniel Cameron, who let three officers walk free of murder charges for the death of Breonna Taylor.

We need to protect our Black women. And love our Black women. Cuz at the end of the day, we need our Black women. We need to protect our Black men and stand up for our Black men because at the end of the day, we’re tired of seeing hashtags of our Black men.

Megan also performed “Don’t Stop,” with rapper Young Thug later on in the episode, not to mention her small appearances in two of the sketches on the show. Overall, fans on Twitter were very impressed by Megan’s performance and the use of her platform to share such an important message.
