Kobe Bryant’s Legacy in Music

The world is still mourning for the famed basketball player Kobe Bryant. On January 26, a helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and 7 other people crashed in Calabasas, California ending the lives of everyone on board. Kobe Bryant was many things to several different people. He was an excellent basketball player, he was a father, husband, entrepreneur and he was also a prominent figure in the music industry. He has represented this in many different ways over the years and we can take this moment to remember a few.

1. Kobe dated Brandy.

Kobe Bryant dated singer and actress Brandy Norwood. Bryant and Norwood had a relationship during his earlier years in the NBA. The two even went to prom together. They were seen together many times but one of the most famous scenes was Brandy cheering Kobe on during the 1997 dunk contest which he won.

2. Kobe’s Features

Bryant has been noted for his love for Hip/Hop and music in general. Although many NBA players identify with the musical world, Kobe actually took his shot at being an artist. He made a couple of appearances on R&B and Rap tracks with artists such as Destiny’s Child, Brian McKnight, and others.

3. Kobe’s Album

Kobe actually partnered with Columbia Records and released his own rap album. The album consists of some covers of other songs, as well as some newer songs from Bryant. Bryant tries to use this project to display his unique rapping skills and extensive vocabulary.

4. Kobe’s influence on the Music World

Although his music career may have been short lived, Kobe’s influence on the rap world will be long-lasting. He has been referenced in countless songs, and a couple are even named after him; Such as Chief Keef’s “Kobe” and Lil Wayne’s “Kobe Bryant”. Lil Wayne even inserted a 24-second silence in his newest album to honor the late NBA star. In the wake of his death, the song “Kobe” by Chief Keef, which came out in 2012, has had a resurgence on the charts. Safe to say his musical influence is still being appraised.
